Perk PBL Wins Big at State Leadership Conference

Take a look at our Competitions page to see which of our members placed. The 58th Mississippi PBL State Leadership Conference was held at Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Natchez, MS March 28-30. A total of 16 PBL chapters from community colleges/universities across the state competed. Our Chapter was 100% in attendance this year (advisers included), and each member competed in two events. It was the highest participation we've had in many years!

In total, Alpha Omega Chapter received first place in three different events and placed anywhere from second to fourth in 8 other events. PBL members were challenged to take tests, give presentations, participate in real life scenarios, and be interviewed by judges.

Web Design 1st Place WinnersKimberly Farmer, a second-year Website Development student won two first place awards at the Conference. Kimberly was awarded first in Help Desk, which consisted of an objective test and a performance competency test. She also teamed up with sophomore Amy Baldwin and freshman Tyler Johnson - both of which are also majoring in Website Development - to take first place in the Website Design Competition. Kimberly was the project manager of the award-winning website. The group was challenged with producing a pre-judged website, presenting a five-minute presentation about their website, and participating in a 3-minute question/answer period with the judges following their presentation.

Janet Rogers and Chelsey Clark swept the Community Service Competition, taking home a first place finish. Each member of the Alpha Omega Chapter volunteered at least 6 hours of their time at the Humane Society of South Mississippi. Janet and Chelsey wrote a pre-judged report about the volunteer efforts and the impact the Chapter’s volunteering had on the Humane Society, following the strict PBL guidelines. At the Conference, they gave a seven-minute presentation in front of judges, during which time they were judged on both the information presented and their overall presentation skills.

Janet is in her final year at MGCCC, and will earn her degree this spring in Website Development. Chelsey, who is currently in her first year at MGCCC, is a dual-major in Website Development and Graphic Design.

Good luck to our first and second place winners who will attend the National Leadership Conference held in San Antonio, TX June 24-27!
